SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The Incident
Management System (IMS) is an internationally-recognized
model for planning, controlling, and coordination of
single and multi-agency crisis management and emergency
responders. IMS has been proven effective for managing
a variety of situations, both everyday events and
critical incidents including: school crisis management,
dangerous goods (HAZMAT) incidents, natural disasters,
fire, event pre-planning, facility emergencies and many
others.
The complexity of incident management, coupled with the growing need for multi-agency and multi-functional involvement on incidents, has increased the need for a single standard incident management system that can be used by all emergency response disciplines. Use of the Incident Command System by public safety and private sector organizations across the country is increasing. ICS is now being used for a variety of applications including:
- Planned Events, e.g., parades, conferences
- Fires (structural and wildland)
- Hazardous Materials Incidents
- Law Enforcement Operations
- Search and Rescue Missions
- Air, Ground and Water Accidents
- Multi-casualty Incidents
- Natural Disasters, e.g., tornadoes
This course introduces the Incident Command System (ICS) and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. Utilizing one-of-a-kind techniques and exercises, participants will understand interpersonal skills essential to incident management at any level, as well as sources of assistance for specialized incidents. This course also describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of the Incident Command System. It explains the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and is designed to enable personnel to operate efficiently during an incident or event within the Incident Command System (ICS)
